Technical Statement for CORKOLEUM – E3 Impervious System Claim
CORKOLEUM is a resilient cork/rubber composite flooring system designed to perform as part of a complete E3 Alternative Solution for internal moisture management. As outlined in the E3 Alternative Solution Statement, the manufacturer does not claim that CORKOLEUM is impervious in isolation. Impervious performance is achieved as a system, when CORKOLEUM is installed strictly in accordance with the prescribed installation sequence:
– substrate preparation,
– compatible adhesive application,
– seam treatment with waterproof backing tape,
– perimeter sealing or coved upstands, and
– the full multi-layer wet-applied polyurethane finishing system.
When the above detailing is followed, the floor finish meets the NZBC E3 requirement that wet-area floors be “impervious and easily cleaned.” The system prevents moisture ingress through the surface, seams, or perimeter junctions, and creates a continuous sealed membrane as required under Clause 3.1.1 of E3/AS1.
Since its introduction to the New Zealand market in 2013, CORKOLEUM has been installed across many thousands of square metres in kitchens, laundries, bathrooms, and other wet areas. Over this timeframe, and with correct installation practice, there have been no recorded system failures. This long-term field performance supports the reliability of the system when installed in accordance with ECOFLOORS’ published instructions.
